Preparing a solar panel enquiry in RG2

Gather a recent electricity bill and think about when your household uses power. Daytime use, evening use and plans for an electric vehicle can lead to different discussions about system design. Tell the installer whether the enquiry is for panels alone or includes a battery, and distinguish current needs from possible future changes.

A roof-specific design matters

A solar proposal should be based on the roof available, its orientation, shading and condition. Ask how the proposed panel layout was chosen and whether the installer needs to inspect the roof before finalising the offer. Neighbouring trees, chimneys and other obstructions should be assessed at the property; a location name alone cannot establish the likely output.

Look beyond the number of panels

Compare the proposed panel capacity, inverter, mounting arrangement and any battery specification. Ask what is included for scaffolding, cabling and electrical work. If two offers recommend different system sizes, ask each installer to explain the reason before comparing their totals. Keep product warranties separate from the installation workmanship guarantee when reviewing the paperwork.

Understand the assumptions in an estimate

Ask for the assumptions behind predicted generation and household savings, including how much electricity the household is expected to use directly. A projection is not a guaranteed return. Discuss monitoring, handover documents and the point of contact if the system reports a fault. If a battery is proposed, ask how its usable capacity and controls relate to your actual pattern of electricity use.

Use the points below where they apply to your project. They are questions to discuss with a company, not assumptions about your property or the local area.

Existing roof work

If roof repairs are already planned, tell the solar installer before agreeing an installation date. Discuss the sequence of work and which contractor is responsible for each stage.

Outbuildings

If panels on an outbuilding are an option, identify it clearly in the enquiry. Ask how the installer would assess the roof and the electrical connection to the main property.

Scaffolding access

Describe access around the building and any areas that need to remain usable. Confirm whether scaffolding is included and how its installation and removal will be coordinated.

Panel layout

Ask for a drawing showing the proposed panel positions. If quotations use different roof areas, ask the installers to explain the design choices before comparing the system totals.

Inverter location

Ask where the inverter would be installed and what access is needed around it. Discuss the proposed position during the survey rather than leaving the decision until installation day.

Battery scope

If a battery is included, ask for its usable capacity and an explanation of the controls. Keep the battery price distinct so you can understand what it adds to the proposal.

Comparing projections

Request the assumptions behind each generation estimate. If the figures differ noticeably, ask whether the difference comes from system size, roof layout or the assumptions used in the calculation.

Product substitutions

Ask whether the named panels and inverter are the products that will be supplied. If a substitution is proposed, request the revised specification before agreeing to the change.
